책이 가득한 공간에 들어서면 외로운 요새에서 화려한 꿈을 꾸는 것 같은 편안함을 느낀다. 서점에 가서 한 권의 책을 진득이 읽지 않더라도, 다양한 책들이 가지런히 꽂혀 있는 모습을 보면 알 수 없는 두근거림과 안정감이 든다. 어쩌면 외로이 책에 온전히 몰입했던 기억, 멍하니 조용한 도서관을 돌아다니던 기억이, 책이 있는 공간 자체를 좋아하게 해주었는지도 모른다. 외로운 요새에서 빛나는 꿈을 꾸게 해주는 그곳. 난 책이 있는 공간을 좋아한다.

나는 이전부터 다양한 매체를 넘나들며 꾸준히 민화를 현대적으로 재해석하는 작업을 해오고 있다. 특히 요즘은 인공지능을 활용한 작업을 이어오고 있다. 나는 인공지능을 활용해 책가도의 본질인 ‘책’이 이끌어 주는 ‘몰입’과 ‘사유’의 공간을 시각적으로 표현하고자 한다. 또한 고전 책가도의 패턴과 스타일을 인공지능으로 활용해 재해석하는 과정을 통해, 전통의 아름다움을 기술과 나의 해석으로 새롭게 표현한다.

12월 24일에서 25일로 넘어가는 순간, 그것은 마법 같은 시간이다. 산타를 믿지 않는 어른이지만, 이 밤만큼은 예외다. 머리맡에 놓일 선물과 환상적인 크리스마스 이미지를 머릿속에 그리며 잠에 드는 시간. 인공지능을 활용하여 이 꿈의 시간 속 새로운 세계의 크리스마스를 현실로 만들었다.

Punto y Raya Festival 2021 Online Edition Nov. 27-28, 2021 Heather Im (KR) introduces her film in the Punto y Raya Festival 2021 Competition. Spring rounds 03'40'' | Colour | Scratch · Video comp. 2020 | Seoul, Republic of Korea Based on Stravinsky’s ‘The rite of Spring’, Im produced this work as a reinterpretation through abstract animation. The idea for the project came in spring 2020, while she was agonising over the human frailty facing the Corona virus. We often forget our essential, more primitive values in this era of cutting edge Technology and the fast development of modern society. So she tried to link all this with the imagery suggested by Stravinsky's music. She didn’t use any graphic vector images, but paper cut-outs and other materials, searching for an experimental way to create a piece analogically. The process involves the analysis of the musical piece itself as well as the mood suggested by the original Spring, which she emphasised using the colour red. www.puntoyrayafestival.com

표지부동?

1987년 9월에 창간했으니, 그동안 <행복> 표지가 왜 안 바뀌었겠습니까? 주거 문화에 대한 관심이 싹트던 시기의 창간호부터 1989년 말까지는 ‘집’이, 소프트웨어를 강조하는 트렌드가 강세이던 1990년대 초에는 ‘정물 사진’이, 사람이 키워드로 떠오른 1990년대 후반부터는 ‘가족’ ‘유명인’이 등장했으니까요. 이후 21년 동안 미술작품이 차지하던 <행복> 표지는 2023년 9월, AI 아티스트 헤더림이 구현한 가상의 공간 이미지로 바뀌었습니다! 말 그대로 AI와 사람이 합세한 표지죠.

미드저니Midjourney라는 이미지 생성 프로그램에 작가가 묘사하고 싶은 풍경의 텍스트 입력값(이번 <행복> 표지에 넣은 키워드는 #주거공간 #가드닝 #조명 #아트 #하이엔드 #미래적인 등. 9월호 창간 특집 ‘2023 주거공간’과 연결된 키워드)을 넣으면 인공지능이 이미지를 생성한다는군요. 이후 원하는 이미지가 나올 때까지 작가가 입력값을 미세하게 바꿔주면서 몇십, 몇백 번의 생성 과정을 거친답니다. 헤더림 작가는 이게 바로 인공지능과 상호소통하는 시간이고, 그렇게 나온 결과물이 인공지능과 작가가 함께 바라본 ‘예술작품’이라 말합니다. 카이스트 공대에서 Human-Computer Interaction을 공부한 후 ‘이미지 생성 모델을 활용한 스페큘레이티브 Speculative 아트’를 선보이는 헤더림 작가의 작업은 앞으로 <행복> 표지를 통해 좀더 만날 수 있습니다.
